The name may not sound particularly beautiful, but, bulkhead lights are now available in contemporary designs that are streamlined, attractive and in a variety of shapes. Installation of a bulkhead light really could enhance the outdoor appearance of your property.

There are smooth circular lamps treated with opal, vandal resistant acrylic glass shades that sit in a cast lacquered aluminium casing which not only look stylish but offer sensational practical function beyond illumination. Such lights would be suitable for commercial UK properties just as well as domestic settings. If you have a long stretch of wall, several could be mounted in a satisfying linear arrangement or alternated at different heights with regular intervals to create a pattern.

Rectangular shaped bulkhead lights are also available with black ABS casing and PIR (sensor movement) activation. These can of course be installed either landscape or portrait style depending on personal taste or the space available. Having an integral sensor on a light saves a lot of time and money but you must be careful with its positioning to avoid its activation by passing wildlife or a similar regular movement that might occur close to your property.

Weather proofing makes these types of lights very practical and low maintenance items once they have been installed. There does need to be some consideration regarding any low hanging branches that may become heavy with blossom or foliage that might obscure the light so if you are fitting one in winter months when trees and shrubs are bare – remember the plants will grow and may have to be pruned back to allow the light to work at its best.

More and more of us are aware of security issues about our homes. Insurance companies demand that homeowners do the utmost to make their properties as secure as possible, so along with locks to keep people out, it is worth having lighting for your outdoors to make sure you can see who might want to come in.

Many bulkhead lights, fitted to an outdoor wall or door well have an integral sensor that will activate the light when any movement is noticed. The benefit of having PIR (movement sensor) with bulkhead lights is the easy activation and the economy of having a light that only comes on when required. In the day, very seldom is any lighting required, but certainly in the uk an outdoor light may be needed when the afternoons begin to get dark or particularly gloomy days provide little light in shadowed areas.

The waterproof housing of bulkhead lights means they can be fitted to any outdoor structure without being adversely affected by rain, hail, snow – any of the precipitation that can cause damp. This secure housing also means that leaf fall, dust and debris won’t penetrate the light and affect its function. Knowing that your light will be functional under any conditions will bring great peace of mind for homeowners. If you need to dash to the garage to rummage in the freezer, nip up to the garden shed for that essential tool or fix any windblown plant in the garden, a bulkhead light with its sensor will make life so much easier.

Home security should be the number one priority in any garden lighting scheme and bulkhead lights are ideal for fixing into porches, cupboards, and other areas of restricted access. And did you know that some of these ‘cheap and cheerful’ lights are now considered design classics?

If you think that ‘bulkhead’ has the sound of ships and seas about it, you’d be right: bulkheads are upright partition dividing a ship into compartments; once you know that you can see quite clearly where the traditional bulkhead light design came from.

But, as with everything else, things have moved on and bulkhead light design is no longer restricted to that circular glass shade held in by white cross bars, although admittedly most of them are still round. The circular shape makes sense; it is far easier to fit a circle into a small space than something with corners.

No matter where the bulkhead light came from, it makes for excellent security and emergency lighting. As an example: put a bulkhead light on the wall by the shed door, fit it with a PIR sensor, and you can approach your garden shed in the middle of the night if necessary, confident in the fact that your path will be illuminated and there will be no nasty surprises or accidents under cover of the darkness.

Do the same by the wheelie bins – it might help you to avoid prosecution for putting waste in the grey bin instead of the green bin…

Wherever and however you live, there is room in your life for a bulkhead light!
