Porch Lights: A Security Essential

It’s not important what type of outdoor light fitting you have in your porch, but it is important that you have some sort of porch light.

A porch light is essential in terms of security; what woman hasn’t had that creepy feeling of being followed and almost broken into a run as her front door came into sight? Imagine if you really were being followed and you reached the haven of your own doorstop, only to find that you can’t see well enough to find your key. Horrid thought eh?

It has to be said that more important than having that porch light is having your key ready before you reach the front door, but the light comes a very close second.

Then, on a happier note, who hasn’t reached their front door in a ‘tired and emotional’ state and then had to fumble to get the key in the lock; that task is so much easier with a light to guide you. In fact, you should not only have a porch light, it should be on a timer too so that you can be sure it’s on in times of dire need.

And for those environmental activists who say that to have a light burning when its not needed is wrong – it’s better to be safe and have a guilty conscience about the environment, than to be harmed but have glowing environmental credentials. And don’t forget, you’re not just looking after your own safety but the safety and wellbeing of your visitors too.

To ease the environmental load of leaving a porch light on, you could opt for LED lamps, which are very environmentally friendly. LEDs use very small amounts of energy, last for 100,000 hours, and don’t contain any toxic waste products.

Another option is to fit your porch light with a PIR sensor that will activate the light when movement is detected.

You know, if everybody left a porch light on overnight, streets would not only look pretty, they might be a tad safer too.

Whatever type of porch light you choose, please do choose one – and use it.
