Shed Light on Unwanted Visitors with Outdoor PIR Wall Lights

Outdoor wall lights with integral PIR are an effective deterrent against any would-be-thief. It is a fact that any intelligently sited garden wall lamps are an integral part of any home security scheme.

However, let’s think about it for a moment; you’re walking down a street after dark, intent on intruding into one of the properties along the road; however, you need to choose your target carefully: there are houses in darkness, houses that are surrounded in a blaze of light, and houses where the lights go on if you get too close.

The house in darkness is a good prospect and so too, surprisingly, is the house surrounded in a blaze of light; the one house you won’t target is the one where the lights go on to illuminate anybody entering the premises.

These lights work by using passive infra-red receivers (PIR) that detect changes in the surrounding air temperature; living beings – that means people and animals – are warmer than the surrounding air and, therefore, trigger the device, which then turns on the light.

PIR lights have something of a bad press, mostly due to ‘false alarms’ caused by passing animals. By fitting your PIR security lights correctly, you can eliminate most of the troublesome aspects of this type of security lighting.

How to Install PIR Security Lighting Properly

Simple guidelines are:

• choose lights that will allow you to aim the detector separately; alternatively, purchase an separate PIR detector

• aim the detector so that it only covers your property, you do not want to detect every person or animal that walks down your street

• to achieve the point above, use light fittings that reduce any upwards shining light (so choose a light with a shield) and angle it at less than 70 degrees from the vertical the maximum wattage of light you need is 150 – anything more than this can actually work against you by creating dark shadows where intruders can lurk

• use a timer so that the lights only come on when essential.

In a world that feels more hostile and far less secure than it used to be, outdoor wall lights with PIR will bring a sense of security to you and your family.
