If you are thinking of buying or have recently bought some stainless steel outdoor lights then you may be concerned about how they age and will they rust particularly if you live near the sea.

Unfortuntely most stainless steel outdoor wall lights are not made from 316 marine grade stainless steel as the cost of this stainless is not cost effective for the manufacturers and even if the body of the light is made from marine grade stainless the screws and washers etc. would not be, so, what will happen over time is the body of the fitting stays in good condition but the screws will rust and you will get rust runs from the screws down the light fitting.

So how do you solve it?

Easy, paint the whole fitting with clear yacht varnish, we found this information out from one of our biggest suppliers who installed a number of lights at a property in Sandbanks on the South Coast, they were all painted with the varnish and 4 years later the fittings are still looking like they just came out of the box.
