Wall Lights For Beauty And Function

Wall lights are used indoors and out, but their functions are slightly different depending on where they are used. For example, outdoor wall lights tend to direct light either directly or downward, while indoor wall lights tend to direct light upward, though this is not a hard and fast rule.

Wall lights use only the wall for support and do not have a base that rests on the ground. Indoors, wall lights give both illumination and a point of interest on a wall, and are particularly welcome in long hallways.

Wall lights are usually affixed three-quarters of the distance up the wall, measured floor-to-ceiling. If multiple wall lights are used, say in a long passageway, the distance between them is usually equal to their distance from the floor, and in many cases, the lights will be mounted on alternating sides of the hallway.

Whether indoors or out, wall lights should be scaled to the height of the wall. A petite wall fixture located very high on a wall will look odd, as will a bold, large fixture that is mounted at eye level.

Many modern styles of wall lights are available with LED lighting, which is cost effective, energy efficient, and very long lasting. Some of them are even made to have a larger main light, and a smaller, adjustable-arm reading light for terrific task lighting. If you want a minimalist effect, you can use simple, adjustable LED wall lights that resemble small shower heads. For outdoors, you can get a colour changing LED fixture that provides a lovely wash of color over a wall – perfect for a summer party on the patio!

When you think of lighting, don’t just consider free-standing and ceiling lights. Wall lighting can be used to add a range of effects beyond simple illumination, and in many cases, can add to the safety of dark hallways or outdoor spaces after dark.
