Low voltage halogen downlights are a superb choice for both task lighting and ambient lighting in your kitchen. They provide that focussed light and, because halogen light is very close in colour to daylight, for overhead, indirect lighting they are difficult to beat. If you don’t fancy the idea of installing recessed downlights, you could consider halogen track lighting; all the advantages of halogen lighting with no rewiring! If you do go for recessed halogen lighting, do be sure to comply with fire regulations by using lamps that bear BSI Kitemark BS476.

The other new kid on the block is LED kitchen lighting, which makes a marvellous partner to halogen lighting when used for accent lighting or task lighting. LED lamps are also available in low voltage versions, so you could slash your energy bill even further.
