LED Tape/Strip Light Frequently Asked
Questions (FAQ’s)
Can I Install LED Tape/Strip Lights Myself?
Yes you can. Our LED tape kits come supplied with everything you need to get
going. The
driver unit has a
standard UK plug on the end
so you can plug straight into a mains socket or your electrician can cut this plug
off and wire
directly to a standard
switch.
The tape has a self adhesive backing that uses high quality 3M adhesive. You
simply peel back
the tape and stick
to whatever surface
you intend to mount the tape on.
What is the LED Tape/Strip Light Driver Unit?
The driver unit is the power supply pack or transformer, if you have a laptop it
is very similar
to the black power
pack you have, a cable
goes from one side and plugs in to the electrical socket and the cable the other
side connects
to the LED strip.
The driver or transformer is used to step the voltage down from 240 volts
mains to 12 volt DC
making the tape
very safe to use.
How Does the LED Tape/Strip Fix to my Surface?
Our full range of LED tape comes with high quality 3M self adhesive backing
which means you
just peel off the
back of the tape and stick
to the surface. No screwing or drilling is required.
What Surfaces Can I Fix LED Tape/Strip to?
We are yet to find a surface that you can’t stick this tape to some of the popular
uses are
below:
Kitchen under cabinets
Kitchen kick plates
Display cabinets
Under outdoor soffits
Bathrooms
Coving channels
What Do I Get When I Buy LED Tape/Strip?
We supply the LED tape as a full kit. You will receive the length of LED that you
have ordered
along with the driver
and all necessary
connection cables that just push together no wiring is required to get the kit up
and running. If
you are ordering
the colour changing kit
you will also get a remote control and infra red eye pre wired into the kit.
The driver comes with a UK plug on the end which you can just plug into a
mains socket or
you can cut the plug off
and hard wire into a
wall switch.
How Do I Connect the LED Tape/Strip?
We do the hard work so that all you need to do is plug into the wall or wire into
the switch. The
tape comes wired
so you just need to
plug the cable from the tape into the male to female connector that comes out
of the driver.
How Much Cable Do I Get With LED Tape/Strip Lights?
This is a question we are often asked. The mains cable that runs to the
transformer/driver is 1
metre long, the
cable that runs from the
transformer/driver to the LED tape is approx 1.3m long. If you need to have a
longer distance
between the LED
tape and the
transformer your electrician can easily cut and rejoin this cable or we can make
a bespoke
length that will be to
your requirements. Just contact us
with the details.
Can The LED Tape/Strip Be Used On A Dimmer Switch?
Our LED tape can be dimmed but beware you must use a driver that is specific
to the tape so contact
us with the
details of the LED strip
you would like to use and we can quote a dimmer that will work for this.
What if I Need a Bespoke Length of LED Tape/Strip?
Contact us. We can supply whatever length you
require and pre wire it so that
when you
receive it you do not
need to do any of the
wiring or cutting.
We are able to supply drivers and amplifiers that will run a single length of up
to 72 metres if
you need it.
Can You Supply Longer Lengths of LED Tape Than Those Listed on Your
Website?
Yes we can. We offer as standard on the website lengths of up to 5 metres as
this is the
standard length that is
supplied on a roll of tape.
If you require longer lengths than this please contact us for a quote, we are
able to join the
tape in house with
some simple connectors
giving you whatever length is req uired up to a maximium of 72 metres.
How Does LED Tape/Strip Work?
LED tape is basically a flexible circuit board with LED chips soldered on. It runs
from 12 volt
DC supply which is
why the
driver/transformer is required making it very safe to use.
Can I Cut and Join the LED Tape Myself?
Yes you can. LED strip has cut points every 50mm. You will need a Stanley
knife or sharp
scissors, soldering iron,
solder, red and black
small gauge cable and some heat shrink.
You just need to use good quality scissors or Stanley knife to make sure it is a
clean cut, as
long as you have
made a clean cut this will
not damage the circuit within the tape. The tape then has 2 small solder point
connections
either side of this cut
point that are marked
positive and negative the red cable is then solderded between the positive
connection points
and the negative
black cable is then
soldered between the negative connection points. We would advise that you
also use heat
shrink on the
connections just to keep it nice
and tidy.
We regret that we are unable to take any tape back that has been cut outside
of our
warehouse.
I Need to Run My LED Tape/Strip Around a Corner, Can I do This?
Yes absolutely, It is a simple job to do which either your electrician can do with
a soldering
iron or we can do for
you.
The tape just needs to be cut as described above on the cut points. You then
use two cables
soldered onto the
positive and negative
connections on the strip to extend the strip around the corner, this avoids the
tape kinking and
breaking the circuit
within the LED strip.
What is the Difference Between the Waterproof and Non Waterproof LED
Tape/Strip?
The waterproof LED strip comes with a very flexible rubber coating that makes
the tape
completely waterproof and
suitable for use in
exterior areas or bathrooms. Please be aware though that the
driver/transformer unit is not
waterproof and must
be mounted out of the
way of moisture.
When to Use Waterproof LED Tape/Strip and When to use Non Waterproof
LED
Tape/Strip?
We recommend that waterproof LED strip is used in all exterior applications and
most
bathroom applications.
Basically anywhere that
moisture can come into contact with the tape. We are often asked whether you
should use
waterproof LED tape for
kitchen under cabinet
applications, for most applications the non waterproof tape is suitable, if there is
a large
amount of steam that
comes up under the
kitchen cabinets for a kettle etc. then you may prefer to use the waterproof
tape just for
peace of mind.
Can I Connect Your LED Tape/Strip to my DC Supply on my Boat, Caravan
or Motor
Home?
Yes indeed. We supply to a lot of boat yards and car and caravan clubs. The
LED tape can be
connected directly to
the DC battery on
you car, boat or motorhome giving a great lighting effect without draining the
battery too
much.
For this application you will not need the driver/transformer so contact us for a
quote without
the
driver/transformer.
If you are purchasing the colour changing LED strip for use on 12 volt DC
supply you will not
need the
driver/transformer you will just
need to connect the colour change unit in between the battery and tape. This
has an Infra red
eye that you must
be able to point the
colour changing remote control at.
How Does the Colour Changing LED Tape/Strip Work?
The colour change LED tape used Red Green and Blue LED’s (RGB) that light in
combinations
to give the different
colours. The tape is
supplied again as a kit with the LED driver/transformer but instead of
connecting the driver
directly to the tape you
need to connect the
colour change unit in line. This colour change unit is remote controlled and works up to 20 metres away. Includes 15 different colour combinations. These colour combinations have all sorts of settings that
you can fade
in and out or set as
fixed colours, Hours of
fun!

How Cheap is LED Tape to Run?
Very cheap, The fixed colour LED tape we supply runs at 4.8 watts per metre
and the colour
change LED strip runs
at 14.4 watts per
metre. You just need to compare this to a 50 watt halogen lamp or an 11 watt
energy saver
lamp to see how much
less energy you will
consume using LED strip as a light source.
Can I use LED Tape in a Bathroom or Outdoors?
Yes you can. We recommend that you use the waterproof LED tape for
bathroom or outdoor
applications, the
driver/transformer must
however be located where it is not exposed to moisture.
What Applications Can I Use LED Tape/Strip in?
The applications are limitless. Some of the popular applications are listed
below:
