Think of this
important
step as a way to direct friends
and family members who are
out for an evening stroll,
providing safety and security
while enhancing the
appearance of your
property.
Garden walls and exterior
lights may be a key boundary
for the walkway or may lead
guests safely alongside a pool
or planted area. Use outdoor
wall lights to add some
evening colour to your
property. If the garden is
alive with colour during the
day, continue to add colour
with carefully selected
external lights.
Some of the most
important
factors in planning and
installing outdoor wall lights
are mood, atmosphere and
balance. Give careful thought
to the types of plants, trees
and shrubs you have, and
plan your lighting for the
mature stage as well as the
growing stage of those items.
Don't over-illuminate the
garden area. Instead, use a
select number of outdoor
lights to enhance the design
of the wall and to contribute
to its purpose. Spacing
outdoor wall lights is very
important.
Be sure to include outdoor
wall
lights in your overall outside
illumination plan. No section
of the garden area should be
lit as an afterthought.
Measure the overall space
and plan the lighting based on
type of fixture, length and
height of garden walls. Think
about using
remote
switches
and
sensors to
provide
additional control over the
evening atmosphere and
appearance. Finally, consider
low energy,
cost-efficient
illumination to make the plan
complete.
Outdoor Wall Light
Frequently Asked
Questions (FAQ's)
Do my Outdoor wall lights
need
any maintenance?
Generally no, but there are
some where we advise a
small amount of maintenance
to ensure that they stay in
good condition.
The lacquered or painted
outdoor wall lights just need a
rub with a damp cloth every
so often to get rid of any dust
or dirt.
The stainless steel outdoor
wall lights wall lights we
advise are
treated in one of two ways,
you can rub the outer section
over with cooking oil (or
similar) and put Vaseline in
the screw holes. This will give
your outside wall lights a
barrier against attack from
moisture that can cause the
stainless steel to go dull. The
Vaseline prevents water
gathering in the screw holes
and generating a rust run
down the wall light as
invariably the screws used for
mounting outside wall lights
are not stainless steel so may
rust.
The second option is ideally
carried out before you fit your
stainless steel outdoor wall
lights to the exterior wall. A
decent quality yacht decking
varnish can be painted over
the surface of the light, this
will give the stainless steel a
hard water resistant coating
preventing the metal from
going dull for many years, the
wall lights then just need an
occasional rub over with a
damp cloth.
Can I use low energy
bulbs in
my outdoor wall lights?
Any outdoor wall light that
uses a standard ES Edison
screw cap light bulb will take
an energy efficient light
bulb as a direct
replacement. The
outdoor wall lights that use
GU10 halogen lamps can use
low energy lamps but you
should be aware that some
types may not fit as the low
energy equivalent lamps are
generally slightly longer than
the standard halogen types
meaning the outer casing of
the wall light sometimes will
not allow for this extra
length.
Outdoor wall lights that use
halogen capsule light bulbs
cannot be changed for energy
saver light bulbs currently,
although rapid movements in
technology are meaning that
LED halogen capsule
equivalents are starting to hit
the marketplace.
Will the polycarbonate
diffuser
on my outdoor wall light go
cloudy?
The suppliers that we have for
our garden wall lights have
invested many hours in
testing the polycarbonate
diffusers and ensuring that
the manufacturing processes
prevent the Perspex from
clouding. To date we have
never had any issues with
outdoor lights clouding
over.
Can I add a movement
sensor to my outdoor wall
light?
Yes you can add a movement
sensor to any outdoor
wall
light. The sensor that we
supply can be connected to
any garden lighting
fixture.
How many outdoor wall
lights
can I connect to a PIR
movement sensor?
The PIR movement sensors
that we supply can be
connected to a number of wall
light fittings so that they all
activate at once. The sensor
we supply will take a
maximum load of 1300 watts
for halogen or incandescent
standard light bulbs or 300
watts of low energy light
bulbs.
What is the difference
between outdoor wall lights
with PIR movement sensors
and outdoor wall lights with
photocells (dusk till dawn
sensors)?
A PIR
movement sensor is
designed to turn the exterior
wall lights on when it detects
movement. The photocell
(dusk till dawn sensor) is
designed to turn your outdoor
wall lights on automatically at
dusk and then off again
automatically at
dawn.
Can my outdoor wall light
with
PIR movement sensor be
over ridden and switched
separately?
Yes this can be done. We
always advise that an NIC
registered electrician carry
out this work but basically
your electrician needs to put a
double switch in the house,
one switch to over ride the
sensor on the wall light/lights
and one switch to manually
turn the wall light/lights on or
off.
Can I use a low energy
light
bulb in my outdoor wall light
with PIR movement sensor
attached or connected?
Yes you can. We advise that
you set the timer on the light
to leave the lights switched on
for at least 3 minutes once
the sensor has been
activated, this will prolong the
life of the energy saver light
bulb although you should
expect the life to be less than
the manufacturers rated life.
Can I mount my outdoor
wall
light on a corner?
Some outdoor wall lights in our
range have the option of
adding a corner bracket to
enable them to be mounted
on the corner of a wall. Click
here to view the
range we are
able to supply.
Can I replace the glass or
Perspex section of my outdoor
wall light if it gets damaged?
The majority of our outdoor wall light range can
have the glass or Perspex
section replaced, email or call
our customer service team
with the make and model of
light to enable them to quote
pricing.
Do my outdoor wall lights
need
to be IP rated?
Yes all outdoor wall lights
require an IP rating. The
norm for outdoor wall lights is
IP44 this gives enough
protection for any area
exposed to rough weather
conditions. We do have some
in our range that are IP23
rated. These IP23 rated lights
are suitable for use outside
but you just need to make
sure that they are mounted in
a suitable place not exposed
directly to harsh
elements.
